Danny Owens - Head Coach - 5th Season
Head Coach
Danny Owens enters his fifth season at the helm of the William Carey University Women's Soccer program after guiding the team this past year to the Elite 8 of the National Tournament. In 2008, he led Carey to an overall record of 16-4-1. The women's soccer team won another Conference Championship which gives the program claim to back to back GCAC titles and a final National Ranking of #16. The Lady Sader's won their first of two National Tournament games in school history eventually falling in the Quarter-Finals.
Over the past three years Carey has posted three winning seasons, a National Tournament Elite 8 finish, two Regional Tournament appearances, and two conference championships. With his first recruiting class entering their senior year, his fourth recruiting class is coming in to officially call the team his own. "We have done a great job of bringing players in who are able to contribute to the program right away. We seem to recruit players who are better every year and which keeps the competition for playing time tough. It makes the job tougher for me, but I guess it is a good problem to have. " said Owens. "We have a lot of experience on the team right now and we hope to use that to our advantage next year."
Individually, Owens has coached two GCAC Players of the Year, 18 players on the All-GCAC team, 3 Honorable Mention All-Americans and 1 All-American. In addition, he has coached four Academic All-Americans honors and his team has had a GPA of 3.1 or better over the past two years
Before his time here at Carey, Owens served as head girls' soccer coach at Our Lady Academy (OLA) in Bay St. Louis, MS. His team compiled an impressive 60-12-7 overall record during his stretch as head coach and won three consecutive Mississippi High School State Championships.
A former Crusader Men's Soccer player from 1996-99, Owens earned All Conference (Gulf Coast Athletic), All Region (NAIA Region XIII), and 1st Team All American (NAIA) honors at William Carey. During his collegiate career, the Crusaders qualified for three national tournaments and had two NAIA Final Four appearances. He was also voted the team captain and most valuable player during his senior year.
Owens earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from William Carey in 2000. Afterwards, he also obtained a Master of Science degree in the field of Psychology.
Danny currently holds a USSF National "B" License.
Danny is married to Katie Owens, formerly Katie Langlois, and has two boys; Michael Owens (7 years old) and Aiden Owens (3 year old).
