William Carey Cheerleading Tryout Information
Clinic for Interested Cheerleaders:
April 8th Thursday
Clinton Gymnasium at 4:30pm
$10 a person
This is a stunt and tumbling clinic and you will learn a William Carey cheer that will help prepare you for tryouts.
Tryout Clinic:

Friday, April 23rd, Clinton Gymnasium

Doors will open at 5pm for warm ups and close at 8pm

During this time applicants will be taught a cheer, chant, and dance that they will be required to perform at the tryouts. Applicants will need to be prepared to tumble during this time.

This is a closed event. Only applicants, the WCU Cheerleading Coach, and any other personal helping with tryouts will be allowed to attend.
Tryouts:

Saturday, April 24th , Clinton Gymnasium

Doors will open at 9am for warm ups. During this time applicants will be allowed to stretch, practice, and warm up any tumbling or stunting.

We will start promptly at 9:30am

This is a closed event. Only applicants, the WCU Cheerleading Coach, and any other personal helping with tryouts will be allowed to attend.

Your application and all components required with it (if you have not submitted it beforehand) which are copy of insurance card front and back, picture of yourself, and release form. All of these forms will have to be turned in on the first day of tryout clinic Friday April 23rd at 5pm and will not be accepted any later. You are allowed to turn these in early.

What to expect at tryouts:

Each applicant will be required to perform the cheer they were taught at the clinic individually

Applicants will perform the chant they were taught in groups of 3.

Applicants will be required to perform the dance they were taught in groups of 3.

Applicants must be prepared to stunt with guys and girls. Judges will be told to look for basic knowledge and execution of stunts. Bases, Flyers, and Back-Spots for all girl stunts should be able to execute the following for their respective position:

Extension and Cradle/Full down

Lib and Cradle Optional Stunt: This is the best stunt or stunting sequence that you can execute.

Ex: Stretch Full down, Arobesque Full down, etc.

If an individual does not know how to execute one of these skills they will be shown the skill, the skill will be explained to them, and then they will be expected to attempt it.

Guys will need to be able to at least execute a toss to hands and cradle with a spot, and toss to hand lib.

Tumbling is required. Mats will be available for standing skills only. Running tumbling will have to be executed on a gym floor and will have to be shown in advance before the WCU Coach at the tryout clinic. You will receive the following points for executing tumbling skills:

Any standing skill with a spot-1 point

Any standing skill without a spot-3 points
-
Any tumbling pass without a spot- 5-10 points
-
Each person will have a 2 minute interview with the coach.
The William Carey University Cheerleading Squad is a great experience. It requires a whole lot of hard work and dedication but it is extremely rewarding in the end.
