Hattiesburg, MS- #17 William Carey University left little doubt who the best team in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference is on Saturday night as they routed the Lady Blazers of Belhaven College 7-1 to claim their second consecutive GCAC title.
Jeana Erickson opened the scoring quickly netting the games first goal in only the 6th minute of play but Erickson wasn't finished. A mere thirty seconds later Erickson scored again to put Carey up 2-0. After an Aimi Beresford penalty kick in the 11th minute that increased the Carey lead to 3-0, Erickson completed the hat trick with a goal in the 25th minute to propel Carey to a 4-0 halftime lead.
Belhaven trimmed the Carey lead to 4-1 with a goal from Nicole Trawick in the 57th minute but the Lady Crusaders would squash any hopes of Lady Blazer comeback. Senior Shannon Steffen added a goal in the 57th minute, senior defender Whitney Stewart notched her first collegiate goal in the 87th minute and freshman Courtney Brinson capped the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute.
Along with capturing their second consecutive GCAC title the Lady Crusaders clinched a spot in the 2008 NAIA National Tournament. This marks the second trip to national tournament for the Lady Crusaders and with the last coming in 1998.
