Decatur, Ala.- William Carey's season came to an end as they fall to the defending national champions and current No. 1, California Baptist, 10-3 Tuesday night at Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.
WCU finishes the 2010 season 45-15. California Baptist improves to 64-3 on the year.
The Lady Lancers got off to a quick start scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning and expanded the margin to 3-0 with a solo shot from Briana Corral in the second. Carey cut the lead in the third as Judy Barber singled home Kelsey Jo Smith for WCU's first run of the game. California Baptist pushed the lead back to 4-1 with a run in the top of the fourth but in the bottom half of the inning Carey capitalized on four hits to plate two runs and trim the margin to 4-3. WCU got RBI's from Larke Nightengale and Casey Alexander in the frame.
The 4-3 margin would be close as WCU would get. Cal Baptist added two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh for the final margin.
The 45 wins totaled by the 2010 Lady Crusaders is a school record.
Bree Neidhardt led WCU at the plate going 3 for 4. Judy Barber added two hits and one RBI. Kelsey Jo Smith took the loss to fall to 7-4 on the season.
WCU finished the 2010 NAIA National Tournament with a 5-2 record.
