Decatur, AL- William Carey University flexed their muscles late as they rally past Mount Mercy College 12-5 in pool play of the 2010 NAIA National Tournament.
WCU, the No. 2 Seed in Pool E, pounded out fourteen hits, including four home runs and two doubles on the day.
Judy Barber opened the scoring for WCU with a two run double in the top of the first but the lead was short lived as Mount Mercy chased Carey starter Alyssa Boutwell after only 1/3 of inning. The Lady Mustangs plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning to open a 3-1 lead. Mount Mercy increased the lead to 4-1 before WCU tied it in the third getting a two run shot from Barber and a solo homer from Jeana Erickson.
Casey Alexander put WCU in front for good with an RBI single in a two run fourth and Barber increased the lead with her second two run homer in a four run sixth inning. Erickson capped the Carey onslaught with her second long ball of the day for the final margin.
Melanie Bush picked up the win firing 6 2/3 innings of six hit relief. Bush struck out six and allowed two runs down the stretch .
Jeana Erickson led WCU at the plate going 4 for 5 with two home runs and four RBI. Judy Barber was perfect at the plate going 3 for 3 with two home runs, a double, and five RBI. Casey Alexander added three hits and scored three runs.
WCU is back in action tomorrow as they take on the Union College (KY) The Appalachian Athletic Conference Champs are 20-16 on the season. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur, AL.
