Jackson, MS- William Carey remained undefeated in the 2010 GCAC Tournament as they rally from a two run deficit in the ninth to knock off No. 12 LSU-Shreveport 9-7 (10) Friday night at Smith Wills Stadium.
The big bats of LSUS struck first as Brandon Bravata smashed a solo homer run in the first to put the Pilots up 1-0. Carey answered back with three runs in the third and got two more in the fourth on a two run single by Jason Terrell. LSUS tied the game by the sixth and in the seventh they opened a 7-5 lead thanks to a Chase Wentz two run homer.
Carey went quietly in the top of the eighth and the bottom half of the inning reliever Kody James wiggled his way out of a jam to keep it 7-5. With their backs against the wall, the Crusaders came out swinging in the ninth. A single by Terrell and double by Ian Sharp got two on with one out for the Crusaders. Josh Dannelley then stepped to the plate and smashed a double off the wall in center to tie the game at 7-7.
James worked a quick ninth for the Crusaders and in the tenth the WCU offense picked up where it had left of in the ninth. With one on and one out freshman Jarred Rogers put the Crusaders up 8-7 with a triple off the wall. Two pitches later Rogers scampered home on a wild pitch to make it 9-7 WCU. From their James worked a quick tenth to secure the victory.
Jason Terrell led WCU at the plate going 4 for 6 with 2 RBI.
James picked up the win going 3 1/3 allowing two hits and no runs.
WCU will take on Loyola at 11:00 am tomorrow. The winner between the Crusaders and Wolfpack advances to the 2010 GCAC Championship game on Monday. The loser of that game will face the winner of LSUS/Belhaven Saturday night at 6:00 pm. The Crusader took the regular season series from the Wolfpack winning 4 of 6.
