Hattiesburg, MS- William Carey needed five runs in the final inning of game two as they salvaged a double header split with Union University as they fall in game one 12-4 but rebounded for a 10-9 victory in game two. Union also took the series opener on Friday night, 8-4.
Union jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a big first inning. Union scored in each of the first four innings and five of the first six to build their 12-3 lead. A run by the Crusaders in the bottom of the seven cut the final scored to 12-4. Union's Josh Jones led with a 3-for-4 game, including four RBI and his fifth home run of the season. Clint Barnes also added three hits and three runs scored in the game. Beau Baker added three RBI and two hits. Senior Carl Harkin (4-0) earned the win, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.
In the second game, Union again jumped out early with a six run first inning. Danny Grimm led off with a home run to start the scoring. Union added three more runs in the second off a Grant Luke 3-run homer. Union seemed in control, leading 9-3 after two innings. However, William Carey scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut Union's lead down to 9-5 going into the bottom of the seventh. The Crusaders hit for the cycle in the bottom of the seventh as they scored five runs on five hits to earn the win. Dustin Smith drove in Jordan Prout with a single to win the game.
WCU is back in action on Tuesday as they travel to No. 2 Southern Arkansas University.
