Hattiesburg, MS- William Carey and Mobile need four overtimes to decide who would advance in the GCAC playoffs and it was the Crusaders who came out on top with a 99-92 victory over the Rams on Thursday night at Clinton Gym.
Neither team led by more than nine points and four GCAC records fell before the night was over.
After leading for much of the game Mobile erased an eight point Carey lead in the second half and Donte Walker's jumper with 6:08 to play put the Rams up 53-51. Carey answered with a bucket from Corey Smith and from there the lead went back and forth four times over the final five minutes. With the Crusaders clinging to a 66-63 lead with five seconds to play Mobile's Ben Healey scooped up a deflected pass and nailed a three from straight away to send the game to overtime.
In the first overtime Carey jumped out to a three point lead but again Mobile rallied and Ji Kimbrough's jumper with two seconds to play tied the game at 74. In the second overtime Drew Meyerchick opened the half with a four point play and yet again Mobile managed to tie the game and force a third overtime. In the third overtime Mobile took charge building a five point lead but five free throws from Terry Wade tied the game at 85. Finally in the fourth overtime Carey took charge for good opening with and 8-0 run and never looked back.
When it was all said and done 66 fouls were called, Mobile attempted a GCAC record 97 field goals, WCU attempted a GCAC record 72 free throws and made a record 49. Terry Wade attempted 30 free throws which eclipsed the GCAC mark of 23 attempts in one game. Eight players fouled out including seven for Mobile, both teams combined to grab 122 rebounds, and three Crusader players played over 50 minutes. The official game time was three hours and three minutes.
Wade led all scorers with 33 points going 19 of 30 from the charity stripe. Cory Smith finished with 19 points. Drew Meyerchick added 14 points and Brandon Cooks added 13 points.
William Carey will take on LSU-Shreveport in the semi-finals of the 2010 GCAC playoffs. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm at the Dock.
