Hattiesburg, Miss.- #8 William Carey women's tennis picked up wins over Alcorn State and #9 Xavier as they closed out the 2017 regular season with a record of 14-3.

Last week, Carey wrapped up the SSAC regular season title and secured the top spot in next week's SSAC Tournament with 5-4 win over #7 Mobile.

Breaking Down the Week

  • Carey opened the week with a commanding, 6-0 win over NCAA DI Alcorn State on Tuesday
  • Carey secured all three doubles points and then finished off the Braves with straight set singles wins by Jelena Djordan (FR/Caplijina, Bosnia and Herzegov), Wendy Barsotti (FR/Aix en Provence, France), and Nataliia Baliaeva (JR/Saint Petersburg, Russia)
  • WCU traveled to New Orleans on Thursday and knocked off another NAIA Top 10 team as they defeated #9 Xavier, 6-3
  • Aleksandra Grela (FR/Brussels, Belguim)/Jelena Djordan and Wendy Barsotti/Nataliia Baliaeva secured doubles points to give WCU a 2-1 lead going into singles
  • Djordan, Baliaeva, and Gloria Kaufman (JR/Jagerberg, Austria) won in straight sets while Barsotti won in the three sets to secure the match.
  • Carey wrapped up the week against Southern Miss on Friday, falling to the Golden Eagles, 6-1.
