Mount Vernon, GA- The 12th ranked Crusaders swept a doubleheader today from Brewton Parker College to complete a three game SSAC sweep. Carey continued to dominate the Barons in every facet as they won game one 19-3 and game two 13-0.
After a scoreless first inning, the Crusaders got going in the top of the second inning. Larson Barkurn (SR/Petal, Miss.), Cody Christian (SR/Satsuma, Ala.), and Wes Brown (JR/Denham Springs, La.) all picked up singles before Adrian Brown (SR/McComb, Miss.) hit a triple down the right field line. A. Brown scored on a ground ball off the bat of Tyler James (JR/Slidell, La.) to put Carey up 4-0 after two innings. James Land (SR/Gulfport, Miss.) led off the second inning with a double and Tyler Odom (SR/Hattiesburg, Miss.) followed with a home run to put Carey up 6-0. Barkurn and Christian Smith followed with singles and Barkurn scored on Christian's sacrifice fly to give the Crusaders a 7-0 lead after three. Carey pushed the lead to 9-0 in the fourth after hits by James, Land, and Barkurn. The Barons got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth but the Crusaders just kept scoring. In the top of the fifth the Crusaders pushed across 5 more runs to put the game out of reach. James, Tyler Graves (SR/Petal, Miss.), Land, and C. Smith all picked up hits in the inning to put Carey ahead 14-3 after 5 innings of play. The sixth inning was much of the same as Carey pushed its lead to 17-3 on hits by A. Brown, Graves, Land, Odom, and Barkurn. In the seventh, the Crusaders tacked on two more runs to provide the final score of 19-3.
Cole Edgens (JR/Central, La.) picked up the win on the mound for William Carey tossing 6 innings before giving way to Josh Morris (JR/Baton Rouge, La.) who pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Land led the Crusaders at the plate going 5-5 with two doubles and three singles. James had two doubles and two singles in the game while Barkurn had four singles. Graves, Odom, and C. Smith each ended up with two hits each.
The third game of the series was much like the first two games which featured plenty of Crusader offense. After being held scoreless in the first inning again the Crusaders erupted in the second inning to go ahead 5-0. The inning started off with a Land triple in the right field corner. Odom quickly followed with a single to push across the first run. With two outs, Christian singled and W. Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A. Brown then delivered a three run double to deep left field and the Crusaders never looked back. Carey pushed across three more in the top of the third inning after Graves led off with a sharp ground ball to third base that was misplayed. Land followed with his first of two home runs in the game to put Carey up 7-0. C. Smith later singled with two outs and was driven home when Christian doubled to right center to push the lead to 8-0 after three innings. Carey added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Barkurn, who had singled, scored off the bat of a W. Brown single to left field to make the score 9-0. The Crusaders put the nail in the coffin in the sixth inning by pushing across four more runs. Land hit his 8th homer of the season with one out to put Carey up 10-0. Carey pushed across three more runs via walks and singles by C. Smith and A. Brown.
Braden Smith (SO/Brookhaven, Miss.) picked up the win on the mound for Carey going 5 scoreless innings. Dylan Spiers (JR/Carriere, Miss.) and Lane Fazende (SR/Picayune, Miss.) each tossed scoreless innings in relief for the Crusaders. Land continued his banner day in game two picking up three more hits with a triple and two round trippers. C. Smith finished the game with three singles while Christian and A. Brown each added a double and a single.
The Crusaders now sit at 22-5, 8-1 SSAC on the season after the weekend sweep. Carey will return to Milton Wheeler Field on Wednesday at 2:00 as they take on the University of West Alabama in non-conference action.
