Birmingham, Ala.- William Carey University men and women's Indoor Track & Field got the 2017 season underway this past weekend in the Samford Open hosted by Samford University.
- Geoffrey Kipchumba (JR/Eldoret, Kenya) took first in both events while setting new meet and school records in both the 3k and 5k. Kipchumba ran two new personal best times for indoor running 14:28 in the 5,000m run and 8:19 in the 3000m. Kipcumba qualified A-Standard in both events for the NAIA Indoor Track National Championship.
- Mateo Edward (SR/Panama City, Panama) took first while also qualifying got Indoor Nationals in the 60m dash running 6.75 in the finals. Edward opens up the 2017 season ahead of last year where he went on to finish 5th at the Indoor National Championship.
- ·Gino Toscano (SO/Panama City, Panama) ran a new school record time of 8.28 in the men's 60m hurdles to take 5th overall and qualify for the national championship as well.
- For the ladies, Annie Cooks ran a season best 7.85 to qualify her B-Standard for the NAIA National Championship in the 60m dash.

"Overall I was pleased with the results this weekend," said Hegstrom. "Just about everyone ran personal best or were ahead of where we started last year. The big thing for us will be making sure we stay healthy as we continue to improve."
WCU men and women's indoor track and field is back in action this weekend in Daytona, Florida, at the Embry-Riddle Last Chance invitational.
