Alexandria, La.- #10 William Carey University improved to 4-0 on the season with wins over Lyon (Ark.) and #4 St. Gregory's (Okla.) in day two action of the 2017 LSUA Invitational.

Game One – WCU vs Lyon (Ark.), 4-3

Rachel Hickman (SR/Poplarville, Miss.) scattered nine hits in a complete game effort as WCU defeated Lyon (Ark.), 4-3.

Breaking Down the Game

  • With the win, Hickman improved to 2-0 on the season.
  • Branda Northrop (JR/Poplarville, Miss.) led Carey at the plate going 2 for 4 with one run scored. Kaitlyn Thompson (SO/Denham Springs, La.), Macy Monk (SO/Denham Springs, La.) and Taylor Brewer (SR/Gulfport, Miss.) each drove in runs.
  • Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, Carey moved in front for good with a RBI single by Brewer and Monk scored on a wild pitch.

Game Two- WCU vs. St. Gregory's

In a showdown of top 10 teams, Hannah Moak (JR/Ruth, Miss.) fired a five hit shutout as #10 William Carey defeated #4 St. Gregory's, 3-0.

Breaking Down the Game

  • With the win, Moak improves to 2-0 on the season
  • Mary Blair Odom (FR/Madison, Miss.) opened the scoring for WCU with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Odom struck again in the fourth with another RBI single and Rebecca Monceaux (SR/Lake Charles, La.) capped the scoring with a RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • St. Gregory would threaten in the top ofthe fifth, as they loaded the bases with one out but Moak worked out of the jam getting back to back ground outs to end the threat.

Carey is back in action next week as they travel to South Carolina for the USC-Beaufort Invitational on February 16-18.
