Hattiesburg, Miss.- William Carey University baseball will open the  2017 season tomorrow at Pete Taylor Park as they take on Cumberland University (Tenn.) at 6:00 pm.


Breaking it Down:

  • Carey is ranked 23rd in the 2017 NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25
  • Last season Carey went 40-21 and advanced to the Opening Round of the NAIA National Tournment
  • At the Plate: WCU returns senior All-SSAC selection Tyler Odom (SR/Hattiesburg, Miss.). Last season, Odom .387 and drove in 53 runs. Also back for WCU is Adrian Brown (SR/McComb, Miss.), James Land (SR/Gulfport, Miss.), Tyler James (JR/Slidell, La.), and Cody Christian (SR/Satsuma, Ala.).
  • On the Hill: Carey will start sophomore Devin Smith (SO/Franklinton, La.). Last season, Smith finished the year with  a 6-1 record  and a 3.35 ERA.  WCU also returns reliever Lane Fazende (SR/Picayune, Miss.) and starter Sam Richard (SR/Jackson, Miss.).
  • Last season Cumberland finished 32-27 and lost in the Mid-South Conference Championship to St. Catharine College.
