Hattiesburg, MS- The post season accolades keep rolling in for the William Carey softball team as the NAIA announced its 2009 All-Americans.
Judy Barber has been selected as a First Team All-American while Jill Wedgeworth has been named honorable mention All-American.
Barber, a sophomore from Petal, MS, has been absolutely outstanding for the Lady Crusaders this season. Barber hit .412 with 17 homers, 12 doubles, and 53 RBI. Barber also led the Lady Crusaders with a .838 slugging percentage and a team high 48 runs scored. The reigning GCAC Player of the Year is the first Lady Crusaders to be named a First Team All-American.
"It goes without saying that JB has adjusted well here at Carey," said Carey head coach Wendy Hogue "She's a tremendous player and has proven herself at each level (conf, region, national) this year. Being named Conference and Regional Player of the Year spoke volumes of her presence in our area of the country; to be named a first team All American her first year in the league, that's just doesn't happen very often. She works hard at everything she does and she has been rewarded justly."
Wedgeworth, a senior from Petal, MS, has been brilliant for the Lady Crusaders over the last four years and her senior year was no different. Wedgeworth hit .352 with 10 homers, 13 doubles, and 58 RBI.
"I personally feel that Jill has been All American material for 4 years now," said Hogue. "I'm proud that she was named to the team her senior season. She's led or been near the top in all offensive categories during her time here at Carey. Her presence on the field - no matter what position she's playing - and at the plate has been a dominant force for our team for four years. Jill is a favorite among league and regional coaches. The joke every year is whether she's FINALLY a senior. Well, she is; and she will be greatly missed."
