Hattiesburg, Miss.- (Bracket | Tournament Website | Box Score) Four Northwood University hitters combined for a four hit shutout as the Knights defeated William Carey University 9-0 in game five of the 2013 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round at Milton Wheeler Field.
In a game that took nearly four hours to complete Northwood finished with eight hits and scored six unearned runs in a game that was delayed by rain and 51 minute power outage.
After four scoreless innings Northwood capitalized on the first of four WCU errors as Casey Mullenix scored on Tre Keyes misplayed grounder to put the Knights up 1-0 in the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh Northwood increased the lead to 2-0 on Adam Humes RBI single and then the wheels came off for the Crusaders in the eighth inning.
The Knights put the first two hitters on base then WCU first baseman Cade LeBlanc committed a two run throwing error trying to get a force out at third base that allowed the Knights to open a 4-0 lead. Northwood poured it on as Humes sacrifice fly made 5-0 and Joee Reyna two run single increased the lead to 7-0. Northwood added two final runs in the ninth for the final margin.
Issac Maturino led the Knights at the plate going 2 for 5 with 2 RBI's. Roman Gomez picked up the win working 6 1/3 innings and scattering four hits. Northwood relievers Jason Heflin, Colton Reavis, and Andres Caraveo held the Crusaders hitless the final 2 2/3 innings.
Northwood advances to the championship game tomorrow at 4:30 pm against the winner of William Carey and the winner of game six (Oklahoma Baptist and S.C.-Beaufort).
