Hattiesburg, Miss.- (Bracket | Tournament Website | Box Score) Northwood University capitalized on four extra base hits as they defeated South Carolina-Beaufort, 7-5 in game three of the 2013 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round at Milton Wheeler Field.
Northwood scored a run in the first inning on an Elvin Rodriguez RBI but the Sand Sharks erased the Knights lead in the third inning as they sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs to open a 3-1 lead.
Northwood answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Bryan Kinard drove in Herb Romero on a two out single to cut the lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the fourth the Knights retook the lead as Logan Brumely ripped a two run single to left field and Herb Romero followed with a sacrifice fly to put Northwood up 5-3. Knights opened a 6-3 lead with back to back two out RBI doubles by Isaac Maturino and Estevan Hernandez.
In the top of the sixth USC-Beaufort cut into the Northwood lead thanks to Ryan Doeppell's RBI single to make it 6-4. With Northwood up 7-4 the Sand Sharks threatened in the eighth scoring one run but Knight's closer Colton Reavis needed just one pitch to get out of a bases loaded jam and end the threat. Reavis then worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 11th save of the season.
Bryan Kinard and Isaac Maturino led the Knights at the plate with three hits each. Cody Faulkner allowed four runs over six innings of work to pick up the win and improve to 6-2 on the season.
Hunter Englehart took the loss to fall to 4-5 on the season. Ryan Doeppel led the Sand Sharks at the plate going 3 for 4.
Northwood returns to action tomorrow at 1:00 pm as they take on host William Carey. South Carolina- Beaufort will play the winner of game four in an elimination game at 4:30pm.
Due to the expected inclement weather entering south Mississippi tomorrow the game times for day two of the 2013 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round have been pushed forward.
Game four tomorrow between Oklahoma Baptist and Central Methodist will begin at 10:00 am CST. Game five between William Carey and Northwood will follow at 1:00 pm and game six between South Carolina- Beaufort and the winner of game four will follow at 4:30 pm.
