Jackson, MS- William Carey scored just two points in the first eight minutes of the game and six points in the final six minutes as they drop a tough 68-60 decision to Belhaven University in SSAC action at Rugg Arena.
The slow start by the Crusaders helped Belhaven open the game with a 10-2 run and they stretched their advantage to 18-8 with 7:48 to play. Carey finally got things going on offense as they put together a 16-5 run to take a 24-23 lead with 1:10 to play in the half. The lead went back and forth three times in the final minute with Belhaven clinging to a 27-26 lead at the half.
The lead changed hands eight times to start the second half before WCU surged to a 41-34 lead with 14:27 to play. Belhaven answered with an 11-3 to retake the lead 45-44 with 10:20 remaining. The lead changed hands eight more times before Carey went stone cold from the floor. Carey scored just six points in the final six minutes as Belhaven closed with a 17-6 run.
Donzedrick Smith led WCU with 18 points.
Carey returns to action on Saturday as they host Auburn Montgomery in SSAC action. Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm at Clinton Gym.
