Hattiesburg, MS- There were 62 fouls, 82 free throws, and it took 2 ½ hours to complete and in the end William Carey improved to 4-0 in SSAC play with a thrilling 80-75 overtime win over Southern Wesleyan University Saturday night at Clinton Gym.
The lead changed hands 16 times, the score was tied on 19 occasions, and the largest lead shared by either team was the final five point margin by the Crusaders. Southern Wesleyan led 40-39 at intermission and stretched the lead to four several times in the second half. Each time Carey erased the deficit with the last coming on Rod Little's three point basket with 34 seconds to play that forced overtime.
In the overtime the Warriors went up by two points three different times and each time Fernando Garcia answered to tie the game. With the score tied 73-73 with 2:42 to play Jason Peychaud stole Rochard Gibson pass to get the defensive stop the Crusaders needed. On the ensuing possession, Peychaud knifed down the lane for a lay-up that put WCU up for good.
Rod Little led WCU with a game high 27 points. Fernando Garcia and Donzedrick Smith added 10 points each.
WCU returns to action on January 6th as they travel to Cleveland, TN, to take on Lee University in SSAC action.
